Judy

Judy was a Border Collie and was bought by the family when they lived in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.   She was born on 24th December 1968 and originally called Eve.  The name was changed to Judy because it was more ‘dog like’ and also in memory of a dog by that name that Master’s family had when he was living at home.

The family had moved to Ampthill in October 1967  and at that time there was only one son, Patrick.  Judy actually joined the family sometime in 1969, but the exact date is not remembered.  Daughter Lesley was born in January 69 so that year was a busy year for them all.

The house had a large garden, mostly lawn and backed onto a wooded area.  Judy had therefore a nice garden to roam in and also the woods at the back.  However across the road was another wood with a winding path that led to The Firs. This was an area of heather and silver bitch, gorse bushes and all on a sand base.  This area was adjacent to the Rugby Club grounds.  Crossing this led to the main road into Ampthill from the west and a on the north of that road was Ampthill Park.  Open green space with football pitches, cricket pitch, children’s play area.  On the extreme north of this area was a hill [yes Ampthill!] from which  there was a view over the brickfields of London Brick at Stewartby and onwards to Bedford. [not actually visible]. Below this hill and still in the park was a pond with a few trees around it.

I understand that Judy  and the family spent many hours in these areas and kept slim by chasing balls which she brought back for further throwing.  I also understand that on the Rugby area, Master would take one of his golf clubs and few golf balls to practice.  Judy loved chasing after the ball and bringing it back to him.

Unfortunately Master does not have many photographs of Judy. He is busily trying to find some and a few are about and will in time be added to this section.  Photography was not to the fore at that time.

Judy moved with the family to Sheringham in 1977 and finally had to be put to sleep on 12th December 1984 following a stroke she had whilst down town with Master.

Master has found a few photographs and is still searching for more.  What he has found can be seen here.
